Updates on Starvation-Exposure Syndrome in Sheep and Goats

Abstract

Within the causes that affect the profitability of sheep and goat productions around the world are the death of the newborns, which generates economic losses from up 77 million dollars. The kids and lambs face various challenges when they come out of the womb and one of the causes that determine the survival during the first hours of life is the starvation and exposure syndrome. For the presentation of this syndrome there are a series of factors related, like low weight of animals at born, incorrect or not at all ingestion of colostrum and milk, the reject to the newborns by the new mother with inefficient maternal behavior or with low weight during the labor, besides of the constant exposition of the broods to conditions of cold or extreme wind for deficiencies of handling that can lead to hypothermia symptoms and if it's not reverted, results in the death of the animals. The objetive of this work was compilate and analyze the causes why the syndrome occurs, to integrate the actuals prevention strategies in the face of the presentation of the same. It concludes that to reduce the death numbers because of this syndrome, is necessary identify the risks and take preventive actions in mothers before, during and after the part, besides to give an integral handling to the pups during their first hours of life, to guarantee high rates of survival neonates.
