Effect of probiotic use on ruminal microbiota and general health of dairy cows
Abstract
This study evaluated the impact of including probiotics in the diet of Holstein Friesian cows during the postpartum period, analyzing their effects on zooproductive and health parameters. 18 cows were divided into three groups: control group (basal diet without microbial additive); T1 (basal diet + 50 mL of fermented bioadditive with a mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus (7.2x10^5 CFU/mL) and Lactobacillus bulgariccus (7.3x10^6 CFU/mL)), T2 (basal diet + 50 mL of fermented bioadditive with a mixture of Kluyveromyces fragilis (7.4x10^6 CFU/mL) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (7.2x10^7 CFU/mL)). Rumen fluid samples and blood tests were performed every 15 days for 75 days. pH, microbial activity and various haematological parameters were measured. Cows treated with bioadditives (T1 and T2) presented a significantly higher rumen pH and better microbial activity compared to the control group (p<0.05). Significant increases in haematocrit and white blood cell count were also observed in the treated groups. The inclusion of probiotics in the diet of dairy cows during the postpartum period contributed positively to animal health and production, promoting a favourable microbial balance and reducing the need for antibiotics.
