Sustainable tropical animal production
Abstract
Animal production is an important sector of agriculture that provides food, income and employment to millions of people around the world. The original traditional systems of tropical America were altered to introduce production systems copied from other latitudes, destroying the original ecosystem. Ecosystem alteration refers to the disturbance of the natural balance and its functioning. It is characterized by the loss of biodiversity, changes in population dynamics, modification of nutrient cycles and ecosystem services, decreased ecosystem resilience, changes in water cycles, soil erosion, interruption in pollination processes, pest control. Regenerative livestock production involves practices such as: grazing management: imitation of natural grazing patterns with high stocking rates (Ultra High Density Grazing - PUAD); eliminating the dependence on biocides; multiplying the animal load 5 or 6 times. The consumption of native legumes, with a high polyphenol load, contributes to maintaining healthier animals free of parasites. There are great benefits for the environment. The soil becomes a great carbon sequestrant, trees help reduce ambient temperatures, the water cycle is improved, and biodiversity increases. There is an urgent need to adapt livestock production systems to preserve and improve the benefits they provide. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of adopting a livestock production system suitable for the tropics.
