Vitamin A and E and its influence on free radical scavenging activity in goat kids
Abstract
Twenty-four goat kids (Boer x Kalahari red) were used in a two two-days trials to evaluate the influence of vitamin A and E supplementation on plasma free radical scavenging activity at weaning. For trial one treatments consisted in: 1) vitamin A and E supplementation (VAE) or 2) placebo (PCB) at weaning at thermoneutral conditions for goats []. In trial two treatments were as follow: 3) vitamin A and E supplementation without weaning (SDT) or weaned (DDT) at environmental conditions outside thermoneutral zone for goats (). Free radical scavenging activity (PERL) was tested by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. There were neither differences (P>0.10) on PERL values between VAE and PCB goat kids nor (P>0.10) between times within treatments, which averaged 26.12, 26.92, 32.12, and 18.17% at 0, 12, 24 y 48 h following weaning, respectively. Similarly, there was not differences (P>0.10) on PERL values between DTT and SDT goat kids at extreme warm conditions, which averaged 23.91, 31.52, 28.45, y 30.19% at 0, 12, 24 y 48 h following vitamin supplementation, respectively. However, the antioxidant capacity tended to improve (P=0.084) marginally in SDT goat kids at 12 h following vitamin supplementation. It was concluded that parenteral vitamin A and E supplementation did not affect the PERL values in meat-type goat kids weaned at thermoneutral and extreme warm conditions, except for the marginal improvement in the antioxidant capacity in those kids at extreme warm conditions, but without weaning.
