Research with marine species of shrimp and fish and freshwater species in the coastal region of Rio Grande, RS, Brazil
Abstract
Studies on the cultivation of fish and shrimp at FURG started in 1972. However, the major boost in this area occurred in 1989, with the construction of the Marine Aquaculture Station (EMA) at Cassino beach and the incorporation of the Continental Aquaculture Laboratory ( LAC) in the Saco do Justino estuarine cove, in 1995. The creation of the Graduate Program in Aquaculture (PPGAq) at FURG generated great development in the areas of production, nutrition, genetic improvement, pathology, water quality for cultivation and evaluation environmental and fisheries for the implementation of new aquaculture systems. More important, however, is the fact that the studies developed in our PPGAq have led to the development of cheaper cultivation technology for the native shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis. The same work philosophy is leading to research in the area of fish and frog production, where the aim is to develop low-cost technological packages, which allow the mass production of these fishery products by smallholder farmers. In this sense, highlight the development of the aquaculture of the sole Paralichthys orbignyanus, of some carp species such as the Common Carp Cyprinus carpio L., The Grass Cap Ctenopharyngodon idella Val., The Silver Carp Hypophthalmicthys molitrix Val. And the Large Head Carp Hypophthalmicthys (Aristichthys) nobilis
