Genomics and its application in animal production

Abstract

The observation that some organisms were suitable for permanent use by domestication has allowed man to develop agriculture, livestock and without seeing it or knowing it, of microbiology applied to food. Little by little, he realized that many of the desired characteristics for an animal or a plant could be obtained through crosses. Repeated selects that have resulted in the greatest part of races or utilitarian varieties that we know today and in many cases they differ quite a bit of wild or original specimens. Without having a theoretical basis the need made the different cultures develop genetics with the notion that some characteristics could pass to the progeny. Now we know that most of the characteristics of organisms including livestock species, resides in genes and future breeding work will facilitate the knowledge of these.
