Lactation curve of Pantaneira cows in the upper Pantanal Sul-Mato-Grossense/Brazil: characteristics and model adjustment

Keywords: animal genetic resource, conservation, mathematical models, milk production, naturalized cattle

Abstract

The objective was to observe the production, physical-chemical composition of milk and characteristics of the lactation curve of Pantaneira cows, and select mathematical models of lactation curve found in the literature. For the production data, physical-chemical composition of the milk and characteristics of the lactation curve, ten multiparous cows were used, under rotational grazing conditions, with the grass Megathyrsus maximum cv. Mombaça. Data collection started shortly after calving and lasted until the natural closure of lactogenesis. The milking was performed manually, twice a day, with the presence of the calf, and the milk was weighed daily. The individual lactation curves were estimated using a linear regression model. For the selection of mathematical models, a database of 3,960 measures of milk production was used. Eight models were been compared that have been used in the literature to represent lactation curves. The lactation period was 180 days with an average daily milk production of 4.93 kg. The peak of lactation occurred from the 35 to 50th day. Milk had an average of 5.2% fat and 3.2% protein. The model that showed the best fit of the lactation curve was the Pollot model.
