Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in promoting animal welfare and raising awareness about responsible pet ownership within society. This study utilized pre- and post-intervention surveys of students to assess their knowledge of basic animal care needs, attitudes toward pet ownership, and practices related to animal welfare. Educational sessions were conducted to provide information on responsible pet ownership and the principles of animal welfare. Results indicated that the majority of students at both educational levels reported owning pets, with a notable trend toward multiple pet ownership. Dogs were the most common pets, followed by a combination of dogs and cats. Most students acquired their pets as gifts, underscoring the need for increased awareness regarding adoption and the importance of planning before acquiring animals. Notably, there was a significant improvement in students' knowledge following the educational sessions. The proportion of students who correctly identified all basic pet needs and recognized sterilization as a crucial measure to prevent uncontrolled reproduction increased substantially. However, awareness of the importance of regular veterinary care decreased slightly, indicating a need for greater emphasis on this aspect.
