Abstract

Reproductive efficiency is crucial for the profitability of cattle production systems, both dairy and beef. To achieve high productive performance, it is necessary not only that females become pregnant within an adequate period after calving, but also that they maintain the pregnancy until parturition, resulting in a healthy calf and productive lactation. In this context, one of the main challenges to be addressed is the pregnancy loss (PL), which negatively impacts the economics of commercial herds. The occurrence of PL results in high costs for the production system, especially when it occurs in the later stages of gestation. The PL can be categorized as early embryonic death, late embryonic death, and fetal death, depending on the gestational stage at which it occurs. Studies have shown that the highest incidence of PL occurs during the early embryonic period, even before the first pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound or rectal palpation, making its detection and mitigation difficult. Several factors may be associated with PL in both beef and dairy herds. Among these factors are genetic, metabolic, nutritional, and endocrine effects, as well as factors related to the environment, health, and management of the herd. Understanding these factors, as well as a better comprehension of the mechanisms that can lead to PL, are essential for developing strategies to improve reproductive efficiency and, consequently, the profitability of production systems. The objective of this review is to discuss the incidence of PL in cattle, its causes, associated factors, and possible strategies to reduce it.
