Abstract

Metabolic profile is a blood test used as an indicator of nutritional balance. The trial was conducted at the Instituto de Investigación Animal del Chaco Semiárido of INTA, Leales, Tucumán, Argentina (27º11'10.60''S y 65º14'32.45''W), at an altitude of 335 masl. For both pastoral and silvopastoral systems, Chloris gayana cv Épica INTA-Pemán (Rhodes grass) was used, and the tree component for the silvopastoral system was Neltuma alba (white carob). The experimental area was 18 ha. Forty-eight heifers were evaluated during three months (June, July and August). The animals were weighed and individual blood samples were taken at the beginning, 30, 57 and 85 days after the start of the trial. Pasture samples were taken before the animals entered the plots. Data were processed with the INFOSTAT program, an ANOVA was performed with a p ≤ 0.05 and PCA with R. No differences were found in animal live weight or metabolic variables between systems. Only system and interaction effects were found in the % of Senescent Material and % of Senescent Material. The advance in the winter season produced significant differences in the variables evaluated. Between 30 and 57 days, no increase in animal weight was observed. At 57 days, the lowest values of total protein and urea in blood were found. Changes in the pasture were observed as the evaluation period progressed, which had an impact on urea and globulin parameters
