Sexual development in taurine, indicus and crossbred F1 bulls in Brazil

The aim of this study were to characterize the sexual development of Bos taurus, Bos indicus and F1 crossbreeds of these two subspecies bulls. Observe from the bulls the evolution of body and testicular growth characteristics, and seminal aspects from puberty to sexual maturity and verify the differences between of the seminal characteristics and scrotal circumference between puberty and sexual maturity. We used 17 Holstein PB-PO (HOL), 21 Gir-PO race (GIR) and 29 crossbred F1 Holstein-Gir (F1) bulls in semi-extensive system from seven to 25 months of age and 18 Nellore bulls (NEL) in extensive pasture range from ten to 30 months of age. Every four weeks were measured data of body growth (body weight and heart girth) and testicular (length, width and testicular volume and scrotal circumference. Semen samples were collected every two weeks and observed the physical and morphological aspects of the ejaculate. Were defined the seminal puberty and sexual maturity according to seminal characteristics. The puberty was reached to 10.1 ± 1.2; 12.3 ± 1.9, 14 ± 1.9 months of age in HOL, F1 and GIR, respectively (P <0.05) and 14.6 ± 1.7 for NEL. Sexual maturity was observed at 12.5 ± 1.0, 15.3 ± 2.4, 18.3 ± 2.1 to Hol, F1 and GIR, respectively (P <0.05) and 20.0 ± 1.5 for NEL. There were relationships between age and body, testicular and seminal characteristics. Scrotal circumference and testicular volume were represented by curves logistic functions. These bulls showed four-month interval between puberty and sexual maturity (sperm quality) and seven months with sexual maturity (quality and quantity of sperm) in Central Brazil conditions. Were determined the body, testicular, seminal characteristics of bulls during sexual development including puberty and sexual maturity. There is a relationship between the characteristics of testicular and seminal body growth with sexual development in bulls
