Abstract

The repeatability of one serving capacity (SC) pen-test in 10 two years old Merilin rams without prior sexual experience was investigated. The experiment was carried out in May 1996. Rams were individually penned with 2 oestrous ewes and given two 40- minute introductory tests for training purposes and four series of 40-minute tests over a single one month period. The variable recorded was the number of services during 20 and 40 minutes of observation. The test was found repeatable for 20 and 40 minutes (P < .01). Future trials should evaluate the repeatability of one serving capacity pen-test without oestrous ewes in rams without prior experience and to establish methods for identfying those animals that may permanently remain sexually inhibited.
