Efecto del comportamiento materno-filial en ovinos tropicales sobre peso vivo inicial de las crías
Comportamiento materno-filial ovinos en ovinos tropicales
Abstract
To evaluate the behavior of West African ewes and their lambs this study was conducted at the Sheep Station, Agronomy School-Universidad Central de Venezuela, using 12 West African ewes, primiparous (P) and multiparous (M), located in individual pens with their lambs. From the moment of birth, ewes and lambs were observed at three times of day (morning, noon, and evening) during the first month postpartum. Also were weighed weekly both ewe and lamb. The effect of ewe’s parity on its body weight (BW) and the BW of the lamb was evaluated, with a repeated measurement analysis over time. M ewes were heavier than P (P=0.0216) with average weights of 41.1 and 33.3 kg, respectively. P ewes bleated, rested, ate, and stood to chew more than M ewes. Activities like bleat, rest, stand, and walk around the lamb were made in greater proportion in the morning. At noon ewes were mainly resting, chewing, licking, and sniffing their lambs. In the afternoon the ewes spent more time eating and walking. The lambs of P rested and slept more than those of M, and the latter sucked, sniffed, and stood longer than those of P ewes. Overall the productive performance and behavior of P ewes were excellent, probably related to the management they receive at this experimental herd, specifically the high BW to reproduction (30-32 kg), which determines that they can raise excellent lambs as an expression of good maternal behavior.
